After realizing my mistake with the glue, I invested in the Scotch Permanent Advanced Double-Sided Tape Runner.

I got the following tip from someone I was in a Facebook group with: If you want the inside part of the letters (the Os and/or the G in this example), search for stencil fonts and download your favorites to get the inside cutout to stay attached when cutting.
